sang-froi'd (sahnfrwah') n. 1. Composure, coolness, in danger or under agitating
circumstances. 2. Musicians of genus lowtechus popus [f, = cold blood]

You've managed to stumble upon the official site for the cult band sang-froid! The band is comprised of Rex Petra (guitars and vocals) and Cam Webster (drums and incidentals).

Their music has been described as incisive, quirky, bizarre, interesting, definitely lo-fi, irresistable and beautiful. It is a cohesive sweet blend of pop and noise. It is music which will from time to time send shivers down your spine. It is also music that you won't be able to stop singing along to.

I got introduced to sang-froid when a friend invited me to go to a music room (called "The Study") in Bathurst, Australia. The venue was small and the feeling electric. It was one of the most inspiring shows I'd ever seen. It was the sort of show that you'd decide to form a band at....

The formula is simple:

  1. take the tunes of Pavement, Sebadoh, Guided by Voices and Teenage Fanclub;
  2. book The Scud Mountain Boys;
  3. make them listen to Chris Knox for 10 hours straight whilst playing cards; and
  4. give them as much beer as they want.

The one problem is that once you've tasted these guys, it's hard to return to mainstream indie rock!

The boys are intending to release a full-length CD about Christmas time with the title of "Orangutan Opus". They've also promised to give me some RealAudio samples that will shortly be posted to this site. In the meantime, you may like to sample a couple of tidbits that Rex did for my young sons:

Elliot's song
Felix's song

or some demo versions from Orangutan Opus:

Tractor
Lolling
